What Does Your Soul Long To Do?

As a medical intuitive healer, people often ask me what their soul is here to do.

“You are not here to verify,

Instruct yourself, or inform curiosity

Or carry report. You are here to kneel

Where prayer has been valid. And prayer is more

Than an order of words, the conscious occupation

Of the praying mind, or the sound of the voice praying.”

TS Eliot, “Little Gidding”

Your soul purpose is not the same thing as your job.

“That best portion of a good man’s life; His little, nameless, unremembered acts Of kindness and of love.”

William Wordsworth, “Lines Written a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey”

Although you may be able to express your soul purpose through your work, and when you are in your right profession you may feel deeply fulfilled, what your soul longs to do will reward you more deeply than any paycheck ever can.

“Be a lamp, or a lifeboat, or a ladder. Help someone’s soul heal. Walk out of your house like a shepherd.”

Rumi

As you come to a closer, clearer understanding of your soul purpose, you experience greater connection to all that is.

This feeling of oneness is deeply fulfilling.

This feeling of connectedness often overrides the anguish of depression, anxiety, loneliness, listlessness and dis-ease that previously plagued you.

Your purpose gives you the strength to carry on, the insight to understand why certain things have happened the way they did and gives you the tenacity to keep moving forward.

As a medical intuitive healer, a simple explanation of what I do is simply listen.

I listen to your body.

I listen to your energy.

I listen to your emotions.

I listen to your mind — your thoughts, your beliefs, the stories you’ve been telling yourself of what you think is and is not true about yourself.

And most of all I listen to your soul for your soul guides your entire life experience.

“I am not afraid…I was born to do this.”

Joan of Arc

I love listening to people from all over the world and from all walks of life. In the past year I have listened to rock stars, Navy seals, CEOs, mothers, daughters, lawyers, doctors, yoga teachers, clothing designers, artists, teenagers, dogs and people so distraught they were ready to end it all right then and there.

As I listen at the soul level, here are a few observations:

  1. What your soul is about is bigger than you. If you are in “I” thinking or “me” thinking, you are not truly listening to your soul. You would be in your ego, the source of all disconnection, misery, worry, anxiety and depression.
  2. Your soul longs for you to take action. If you are stuck, stagnant, treading water or feeling like you’re going nowhere, you have lost touch with what your soul prompts you to do.
  3. As you connect to oneness by taking right action, you resonate with true joy. If you feel disconnected from the natural bliss inherent in your soul, you have lost touch with what you’re really all about.
  4. The challenges you have faced in life are often directly related to your soul purpose. For example, if your soul purpose is healing you may have experienced a tremendous amount of illness. If your soul purpose is forgiveness, you may have been deeply wronged. When your soul purpose is to lead you may have faced countless challenges to your inner strength and had others question your values, opinions or reasoning. The gift of these obstacles is to ground you more firmly in what you are here to do.

“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”

Albert Einstein

As I listen at the soul level, this is what I hear souls telling me they long to do:

Create

Express

Transcend

Forgive

Give

Grow

Heal

Connect

Explore

Lead

Love

Become

Be

Fulfill

Share

Worship

Nurture

Create. If your soul longing is to create, you may find yourself yearning to build, paint, write, design, establish. Although creativity is typically thought of being the province of artists, some of the most creative people I have ever met have been entrepreneurs. You dream of establishing something that can be left behind, that makes a difference, that inspires others to see, feel or hear something from an entirely different perspective.

Express. When your soul longs to express, you hanker to release thoughts, feelings, insights, imaginings deep inside you so that others may benefit. This communication could take written form but may also include public speaking, musical or dance performance. Releasing your deeply-held energy and emotions transforms not only your life but the lives of others.

Transcend. Your soul never intends to stand still. If your soul purpose is to transcend, you may discover yourself with tremendous personal challenges — anxiety, depression, addiction, abuse, unthinkable poverty and many other seemingly insurmountable obstacles. You become the way shower for those who think themselves too weak or their challenges too daunting. You demonstrate what it means to live in the present by letting go of the past.

Forgive. Although the spiritual texts encourage us to forgive (God forgive them for they no not what they do. Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who have trespassed against us), we must discover for ourselves the exact best methods through which we release the resentment, bitterness and judgment that keeps our energy stuck in the past. If your soul purpose is forgiveness you may experience many seemingly atrocious personal affronts that challenge your concepts of what is and is not forgivable.

Give. Although in life there is always a balance between giving and receiving, the first step is to open your heart and give all the way from the level of your soul. Once you comprehend that whatever you give is in fact what you also receive, you discover that the more you give the more blessings become miraculously available to you. You demonstrate faith in the abundance of life by fearlessly sharing all you possess. This may not only include money but also extend to your knowledge, time and wisdom.

Grow. When your soul longs to grow, you constantly seek out new sources of spiritual nourishment so that you can expand in many directions. Learning and growing tend to go together. Your mind prepares the way as your soul grows. You naturally gravitate towards other learners and growers who can keep up with your accelerated soul path.

Heal. When your soul longs to heal, you naturally want to restore a sense of inner peace, wholeness and well-being to everyone everywhere. This may begin through healing yourself or discovering the inner alchemy of the healing arts, be it traditional medicine, Ayuveda, energy healing, food healing or all manner of natural healing.

Connect. When your soul longs to connect, you perceive the common humanity in people everywhere. Your connections may be physical, energetic, emotional, mental or spiritual. As you form invisible cord connections with others you leave behind any illusions of separation or loneliness and feel at one with the family of man.

Explore. Whether you become a psychonaut traversing your inner landscape or yearn to experience the seven continents, rivers, mountains, lakes, streams, oceans, above and below, your soul delights in all of creation. You uplift others by your appreciation for the beauty and wonder of the planet and life itself.

Lead. You may find yourself suddenly out front. You may have been born with an alpha personality or discover your passion for a cause so important that you steer the destiny of millions. Your inner alignment with deeper values inspires others to follow.

Love. When your life purpose is to love, you may find yourself in the humblest of circumstances expressing your appreciation, reverence and adoration for the people, places, animals and other inhabitants of the planet as well as the glory of the universe itself. You intuitively understand how much love other people put into their own contributions. You value what leads others to an experience of unconditional love.

Become. When your soul purpose is to become, your life is all about personal evolution. You may be born into a certain set of circumstances that are so uncomfortable, so personally detestable to you and so untenable that you find yourself forced to develop. This looks to others like tremendous transformation, whether it be deepening your wisdom, building financial assets from apparently nothing or learning to express your own highest potential.

Be. If your soul purpose is being, you may find yourself expressing the inner peace that comes from being at one with all that is. You fully accept your life circumstances, other people and the way life is without needing to fix, correct, control or edit the perfection inherent in the process of life.

Fulfill. If your soul purpose is fulfillment, you may identify needs around you and find unique ways to make sure that these needs get met. You feed the hungry, plant a tree, hug the children, make friends with the homeless, teach those who are afraid how to find peace inside themselves.

Share. If your soul purpose is to share, you may recognize that there is no such thing as a vacuum in the universe. You may recognize the truth that all material possessions are yours to play with for only a few cycles around the sun. You transcend the illusion of scarcity and contribute to the lives of others whether you share your money, wisdom, time or personal energy. You recognize that all you give is quickly replaced as the well of abundance never runs dry.

Worship. When your soul purpose is to worship, you recognize the contribution of prayer, meditation, ritual and silence. You give thanks whenever possible. You empower others to see the visible proof of God in action. You inspire faith in the process of life and a deeper understanding of the mysterious force of universal love that guides the divine unfoldment of our lives.

Nurture. When your soul purpose is to nurture, you may find yourself tending plants, hugging babies or providing comfort for those who seemed to have lost their way. The universe responds to your kindness by flourishing in your very presence. You recognize that your life is about something greater than yourself and you are happy to support the growth process of others.

As you read over these soul purposes, you may find yourself relating to many but resonating with one or two.

Give yourself permission to meditate. Pray for guidance for your own soul purpose to be revealed.

As your soul purpose becomes self evident, the path you have taken so far in your life may make more sense. The way forward may become more clear.

The ego stories you have been telling yourself about why your life has seemed so difficult may now need to be rewritten.

Miracles occur as your why appears in your inner vision.

What is healing? Healing happens when you understand your soul purpose.
