Host Gino Arcaro begins the podcast by talking about what his poor immigrant Italian ancestors used to preach — to stay hungry. “Stay hungry to prevent complacency,” Gino advises. “Don’t lose yourself. It’s easy to be someone else by being a follower instead of a leader. Your competition doesn’t win, you lose yourself.”

Following Gino’s inspirational message, Gino asks Catherine Carrigan about her career path.

Catherine explains that there are many ways to tell a story, but she feels an important way to look at her own story is the theme of learning how to succeed by failing.

“Many of us have experienced failure,” Catherine says, “failure is only final if you give up.”

Catherine traces her success back to when she was 34 and had spent two years in a support group for battered women.

“That experience forced me to face the fact that I had been battered by my father,” Catherine relates.

“I thought, ‘This is actually totally ridiculous. I want to be happy. I don’t know how to be happy.’

“I went through this period that was so ridiculously difficult I made up my mind to be happy.”

Shortly after this, Catherine got off lithium and antidepressants after 18 years and wrote her first book, which became the bestselling book of the original publisher, Heartsfire Books of Sante Fe, New Mexico.

“I totally turned my life around and I am thankful for the YWCA,” Catherine relates.

“If you are listening to the podcast and you are suffering from abuse, I highly recommend you Google the wheel of power and control and learn about the pattern of abuse so you can free yourself from this pattern.

“Anything great in your life begins with a choice. You make up your mind to do something. You make a choice to be happy, to be successful, to write the book, to be a highly successful author.

“At the time I was in the support group for battered women, I thought, ‘This is ridiculous, I deserve something better.’

“Never ever give up — there’s always a way.

“You keep trying a way until you find a way that works.

“You deserve to be happy healthy successful.

“The key is to keep moving.”

After getting out of her abusive marriage, Catherine was on a train to New York City to get a big job when she stopped to visit a friend who was a playwright.

“He had 10-year-old towels and a 10-year-old computer and lived in a one room apartment but he reminded me that what I always wanted to do was write plays,” Catherine recalls.

She moved into an apartment below her mother’s house and began the process of writing 12 plays followed by publishing her first book in 1997, which was all about how to heal depression without drugs.

“Every time I worked on that book — I lived in a suburb and would have to drive through Atlanta traffic, park my car and walk 10 minutes to Emory Medical Library — what motivated me was the thought if I help even one person avoid what I went through it would be totally worth it.”

Catherine got into exercise while she was writing plays.

“Finally I had an extra $50 a month so I joined a gym,” Catherine recalls.

“I was there all the time so they said ‘Why don’t you start teaching classes.’

“I was a terrible instructor, I had very bad rhythm and I failed my first exam to teach aerobics.

“This rotted my socks because I am a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Brown University.

“Then I failed the second exam to be an aerobics instructor but finally I found someone in my third exam who would pass me.

“I was terrible but because I knew I was terrible I kept practicing.

“I kept learning about the body. Exercising regularly is part of being a healthy person.

“It all started with failing — it all started with being unhappy and making a choice to do something different.”
